You can Log Off But Not Opt Out

A few weeks ago I came across this article, Social Media: You Can Log Off But You Can’t Opt Out, which has put forth some interesting viewpoints, and to a large degree puts the right perspective on social media tech and the constraints they impose socially. Here’s a snippet:

…So technology is political in the sense that it is a site of struggle (perhaps, one could say, communication technologies are “places where revolutionaries go“) but it is not political in the naive sense that it determines the outcomes of social action (i.e., there are no Facebook or Twitter revolutions). Most relevant for the present conversation is this concept of non-optionality—that we can neither opt-in or opt-out of the socio-technical system. We are all touched by the emergence of new technology, even those who are most marginalized within the system. Because, at any given historical moment, technology and social organization are always linked, we all inevitably feel the ripple effects when new technologies are introduced. This very point was the premise of the South African slapstick film The Gods Must Be Crazy, where a single Coke bottle tossed from a plane is imagined to upset the entire social order of a remote Bushmen tribe (caveat emptor: racist and inaccurate portrayals abound)…

Two Hemispheres of Tech and Memory

Memory is a weird thing. There are some who say you can hack it (and other aspects of your mental/physical capacities), there are others who believe that you are given a brain with only so much capacity, but few who ever make it to the breaking point of using it all. I’ve been asked if I do mental exercises to train my brain (nope), or what it is I do to read, retain, and restate so much (rest/Sabbath is key). And its amazing. We can think that we forget so much, but in a flash – whether its a smell, touch, sound, or sight – we are triggered to memories. I remarked to a friend how one of the stars of The Avengers movie looked so much like someone from the past that it was actually disruptive to enjoying it without employing a memory filter of sorts. Memory… its got a few sides worth considering in our techie age for sure.

One of these hemispheres of memory is just the facility of managing it. As stated so nicely on the post at BigBible that sparked this one:

How do we learn from this now, in a culture that relies more and more on other mediums to do our remembering for us?  Do we bother re-visiting our memories, or do we just assume they’re stored somewhere?  What happens when we have a dramatic encounter with God?  Do we remember it – consciously recall it – in a way that influences our lives?  How can we harness the power of technology to help us remember, without putting it in the place of memory itself…

This reminded me of one of the ways in which I use Evernote – I use it to store blog posts (archives) and tweets that I which to remember or probably look back at later for reference. And usually I’m just saving a snippet, not the entire article – even though it might be something specific in the article that’s not clipped that I might need later. In a real sense, I’m using Evernote (a storage system with algorthm for search) as an appendage to the brain I already have, sometimes to a deterement of knowing/undestanding/wisly applying whatever was saved there.

The other hemisphere comes from the side of my devices. Over time I’ve steadly acquired more and more portable storage space. These days, my mobile has 48GB inside (16GB internal memory + 32GB microSD card). My iPad has 16GB, but I rarely save anything on it that I’m not concerned with deleting, I use Dropbox and ad-hoc WLAN connections to my mobile to be its backup/appendage. Then there’s also that 1GB USB memory key bracelt that’s an ICE mechanism. But is that steady acquisition of more and more space healthy? I’m already dealing with several layers of backup/redundancy because of it – but why is it even needed (besides my admiditly large photo and music collection)? Is this a silo just waiting for me to be taken out before it can be cashed in (Luke 12:13-21)?

Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?” Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man produced a good crop. He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’ “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.” “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’ “This is how it will be with anyone who stores up things for himself but is not rich toward God.”

Memory. Its a tough subject from both ends. A lot that we do with language is simply the translation of memory to activity and back to memory. Perhaps its ok to have some of this external to our physical facilities (remember how God instructed Israel towards the level of remembering the law, “write it on the tablet of your hearts,” “write it on your foreheads and eyelids,” “inscribe it on the doorposts of your home,” “when you get to that place, build me an altar…”). But, if we spend more time building the case for these external places and channels for memory, do we also miss the point of the life we were meant to live (John 4:21, 23)?

…a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem… But a time is coming- and now is here – when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth, for the Father seeks such people to be his worshippers.

When memory in both of its spheres incites us to live to Him, then is it most valuable?

 

One Year Ago: Sketching at the 2011 GCIA Conference

GCIA SKETCHNOTELooking back over the past years, I came across this posting and sketchnote from the 2011 GCIA Conference. There really was a lot of information passed during that time – much, much more than could be gathered by one person or a drawing. But, I can see in that drawing some of the things I thought about throughout. Of some of those points that I can remember clearly in seeing this again:

  • There was a urgency to not miss the boat any more than sensed when it came to digital ministry efforts
  • There was an openness to conversing across denominational and organizational lines
  • While it was opined, there was little anyone could really solve in that space towards non-English content (almost like English stunted the activity we could do outside that context)
  • Folks loved their mobile apps
  • Creativity is seen as a smaller activity than production (organizationally)
  • Mobile can be understood by talking, but better known by living

Just things that came to mind. I enjoyed that time, and perhaps will get to connect with those from that GCIA meeting in a conference this year.

 

When Does Innovation Matter to Mobile Ministry

Sitting on this side of the mobile ministry discussion, it can at times look as of there is little to no progress happening (mind you, this has been an endeavor since 2004; it’s a distinct perspective). And yet, that really isn’t the case if one were to take into account how change has happened when other behaviorial and technological paradigm shifts have happened:

…The most common response to such griping has been, just wait. Many techno-optimists base their thinking on a famous 1990 paper by economic historian Paul David, which described how, for decades, electricity had little effect on industrial productivity as manufacturers simply swapped out older energy sources for electric power but changed nothing about how they made things. It was only as new factories were built that took advantage of the unique properties of electric motors that a productivity boom ensued. Just give the digital age a bit more time, and you’ll see huge changes (and, one hopes, improvements) in how we work and live…

What Do You Understand About This Space

I asked at a meeting with several internet ministries last year if there was a methodology to their behaviors/intentions to use the web as a connection point for evangelism and discipleship. I was concerned in many respects, because while I was listening to a group of people passionate about sharing the fruits of their faith, I heard very little about understanding the implications of being in this space. This magazine takes the posture of bearing to understand the implications of mobile before and during sharing the passions that make mobile a suitable addition to the toolkit of ministers and developers alike. To that end, we poke a ton – its unique and then some. And then… its not all that unique at all:

…Corman believes that the spread of “hacktivism,” which first made mainstream headlines when Anonymous attacked the Church of Scientology in 2008, demonstrates that “those who can best wield this new magic are not nations. They’re not politicians. The youngest citizens of the Net don’t even recognize allegiance to a country or to a political party. Their allegiance is to a hive. In some ways this is very exciting. In other ways this is terrifying.” The terrifying part, for Corman, is that the Web gives individuals immense power without instilling the “compassion, humility, wisdom, or restraint to wield that power responsibly.”…

What do you get about this level of access, security, connectivity, and affordance? Do you understand that content isn’t king, the person who designs the user experience is king – and you are simply a steward of one part of the field? Are you concerned about DNS activities? Or, does your mobile lifestyle begin and end with those communications which happen without the facilitation of global cables, interested governments, and occasional support of standards bodies?

Nothing about tweeting a post embeds compassion, justice, or even the hope of the Gospel into the Internet. That only comes when that tweet intersects with the personal reality of the person reading it. Its relevant (and therefore points to salvation) when its personal. Nothing more, nothing less. This isn’t a magic hat. Nor is it the best thing since sliced bread (though, you can argue that there are probably more mobiles than sliced bread in the hands of folks and that might be near-correct). What do you understand about the implications of telling people to go see announcements on Facebook – when you are also not teaching them about Facebook (or Internet) addiction? The two go hand in hand in terms of lessons – as well as hand in hand in terms of how you lean on these communication technologies for the prosperity of those reading/listening/watching.

Do you need to understand everything about how the Internet and mobile works in order to do ministry? No. Should you know as much as possible about the implications of it not working for whatever reason – whether you can solve it or not? Yes. And its to that end we exist in this space… its not that unique at all, just an acknowledgement of something different amongst the hype of the moment.

 

Could Mobile Also Be A Species to Steward

Tamagotchi via WikipediaI will admit that I’ve only thought on this end of things here and there. But, its there. And at least in respect to thinking about these implications of mobile, it makes sense to at least broach the subject: what if we look at mobile the same way we look at animals? What would the ministry implication look like in that respect?

What Got Me Down This Line
Of those implications to mobility, and evolutions within this space, one of the areas I see coming down the pipe is that of cybernetics and AI. This idea that technologies can be grafted onto the organic/natural facilities that we have, and with some kind of computational nature that goes a bit beyond what we might have realized within ourselves. Its not a prediction of where things are going so much as it is an observation. And as such, insights on the subject have interested me beyond the fictional accounts of future-scapes that I read often as a child:

…Donna Haraway, theorist on our transformation into cyborgs, published ‘The Companion Species Manifesto’ in 2003. It addresses the relationship between domestic dogs and humans, but there is much in there to inspire designers of smartphones, apps and agents.

“Cyborgs and companion species each bring together the human and non-human, the organic and technological, carbon and silicon, freedom and structure, history and myth, the rich and the poor, the state and the subject, diversity and depletion, modernity and postmodernity, and nature and culture in unexpected ways.”

Using inspirations from theory such as Haraway, and fiction – such as Philip Pullman’s ‘Daemons’ from his ‘Dark Materials’ books – we can perhaps imagine a near-future that is richer and weirder than the current share-everything-all-the-time/total-gamified-personal-productivity obsessions of silicon valley.

A future of digital daemons would be one of close relationships with software that learned and acted intuitively – perhaps inscrutably at first, but with a maxim of ‘do no harm, with maximum charm’…

With my mobile, as highlighted in a piece about contextual UIs at my personal website, there’s this interpleay between the context of my environment (day, night, connection of Bluetooth accessories, etc.) which alters the state of my mobile. Even so much that its basically now a matter of “just keeping it fed” with power of cellular connectivity, that makes it just as much a living accessory to my life as it does a tool to enable activities. I can see this perspective that a mobile is very much adapting and adjusting to its environment, and I’m its caretaker. Which leads me to wonder what implications that has when it is a tool for more than just notification of some communication event.

A Perspective
The reading that comes to mind is found in Genesis 1:28:

And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

The materials that make up mobiles are found in the earth. The ores and knitting together of them by electrons and other ingenoius methods have made something that was once not “living” into something so attached ot our daily lives that to some degree, it is now given life. We speak to our mobiles and they respond (Apple’s Siri as a recent example). We personalize them custom ringtones, themes, and such. Then we add abilities to them with the applications we install (like that scene in the Matrix where Neo was trained by simply downloading the knowledge into his brain). They aren’t sentient, but there is some aspect of stewardship to these devices that very much mimics how we manage our associations with animals and other entities on this planet.

But, mobiles aren’t like this you say? Aren’t they? Don’t you cradle your’s in a case, maybe even a near-personalized one? Perhaps you went for a lesser case for the mobile, but have that custom ringtone or ring-back tone – you know, that song that’s createed by you, or has some knd of meaning because its like someone or something close to you? Wallpapers, alert settings, even the arrangemetn of the apps that you use, carefully curated and managed on something that doesn’t live… or does it?

I’m not making the argument that at some point devices will be much more llife-like. In some respects, they will be, and they won’t be called mobiles. But, in the methods and behaviors of use that we have, there is this almost lfe-like attention we pay to them as if they were compensated assistants. To that, we must ask the question that goes beyond tools to something more like accountability and stewardship – if your mobile could talk about you, what would it say about how you’ve treated it and what you do with it?

 

Mobile Ministry Methodology (v1)

For the years that I’ve been looking at this intersection of faith and mobile technology through the lens of MMM, one thing has honestly escaped much of the conversation around the topic: if this intersection is valid, then what do people do to get past that intersection and into some relevant demonstration of their faith. In effect, what’s the method to the madness?

Being able to devote much more time to MMM in the past two (2) years has granted my thinking and action spaces to do just that – figure out the methods and some streams of activity within them. You’ve seen this in part if you’ve followed this site for sometime and watched its evolution. In this post, I kind of want to pull all of that together into what amounts into a mobile ministry methodology. The goal of this methodology is to literally demonstrate the definition of mobile ministry in the midst of practice and application.

What is A Mobile Ministry Methodology

The Mobile Ministry Methodology is a framework designed to assist individuals, ministries, and organizations determine the value, prospects, process, and successes of mobile ministry projects. Derived from SDLC methodologies, this framework is designed to keep the a singular goal in perspective despite tendencies for scope creep.

Please note, this is a framework. Therefore, activities within each phase might differ depending on the project. That said, the phases are quite rigid in keeping the focus of the project on both ministry and mobile applications.


Phase One: Determine if you are working on a mobile ministry project

The first step of this methodology is to determine if you are indeed working on a mobile ministry project. While it might seem that any project utilizing mobile devices and services is a suitable ministry project, the determining of whether it is a mobile ministry project falls towards whether the goals and activities within the project affirm the definition of mobile ministry:

Mobile ministry is the skillful use and application of computer technology classified as mobile for the context of fulfilling the religious designation of forwarding the proclamation of the key ideals and history of the faith, following form to and innovating on top of cultural and faith traditions within applied contexts [source]

If your answer to this question is that you are not working on a mobile ministry project, this methodology and process will not be helpful to you. If the goals of your project would like to line up with ministry, as well as keeping that technical component of being mobile, a good place to check the motives and goals of the project can be found using the following Biblical references:

  • Deut 6:1-9
  • Matthew 28:18-20
  • James 1:22-27
  • John 17:20-26


Phase Two: Identifying the Frame for Mobile Ministry

There are several contexts in which mobile technologies have been used, or mobile behaviors tracked and observed. However, all of these are not specific illustrations of ministry (faith-building, faith-tradition extending, faith transformations can all be used as terms here). When mobile intersects with ministry, and the resulting actions are a change in behavior towards both technology and faith, then we can say that mobile ministry has occurred. MMM’s  investigation and logging of activity in this space has identified these contexts (displayed here in their primary and secondary frames, linked to articles published here which correlate):

Phase Three: Identifying the Primary Focus for Mobile Ministry Activity

Activities within the previously mentioned frames of mobile ministry have engaged in one or a combination of three focus areas:

  • Devices
  • Services
  • Experiences

Previous discussion on these.

The focus is determined by the core and learned competencies which area needed in order to direct the mobile ministry effort. Many mobile ministry projects will involve two or all three of these at some junction, but the primary focus clarifies how in the later steps you can better identify gaps, resources, and implementation items.

Whether you are using one or all three of these layers, it is helpful to have within your project person(s) which have specific knowledge of the devices and their capabilities, the programmable and political natures of the services to be implemented, and/.or then a definition of the experience for users, administrators, operators, developers, and any other stakeholders. Within these layers of mobility are a wealth of forks which will determine the success or failure of your project if they are not accounted for at this junction.

Engaging the Project Activities

Once you have identified the framing and focus, the methodology begins to take place. While this might look different for specific outfits, the software development lifecycle (SDLC) methodology actually grounds the following phases of the methodology/process:

  • Establish the Three Pillars
  • Design and Test
  • Implement
  • Support, Report, and Reinitialize


Phase Four: Establish the Three Pillars

The first phase for the mobile ministry methodology involves what we call the three pillars: goals, issues, and resources.

  • Goals: setting a specific project goal for the project (multiple goals introduce variables harder to solve down the line); the goal should fit within a single mobile ministry frame, and have its mobile ministry focus clear upon statement
  • Issues: assessing the gaps (problem statements) of which if not solved, will cause the project (not simply expectations of the stakeholders) to fail. Issues might include the expectations of stakeholders, however, I would caution to making sure issues relate to the goal, and why implementation of the project will not perform as expected.
  • Resources: your people, processes, and tools which are readily available, or available with little extra effort or expense, that will assist you in completing your project. If you lack the resources (people, processes, or tools), then your primary issue is that of a lack of resources, not costs, time, or reach.

This would be similar to the project initialization and analysis phases of an SDLC/Agile methodology. It is within your dissection of the issues and and resources in which an analysis of the feasibility of your project will come to light.


Phase Five: Design and Test

Design and Testing should happen in concert with one another. It will be clear after the identification of the goals and issues what exactly needs to be focused on. Design should therefore take place in two phases – staging prototypes/examples and test-ready prototypes/examples. I am personally of the opinion that you spend more time refining the design than testing multiple iterations, but I know of many people having different philosophies here. I’d also recommend that any design and testing (especially if we are talking applications, software, and workflows) should take place with live data, and not dummy data.

Testing is about whether you are making realistic steps towards your goal, and have you developed an experience with your product to match the expectations after that goal is met. Anything that you are testing that does not have direct correlation to solving the issues which prevent your goals from happening should be dismissed (or in some cases, lowered in priority). Testing should also be designed to correspond to the availability of your resources in concert with how the results of the testing knock off all or some of the issues raised in the previous phase. There is potential for projects to spoke into additional requirements or opportunities as a result of the testing/testing data, so I would recommend that anything learned that does not positively effect your specific goals, be dropped for another project or future iteration of the current project.

The testing scripts should be designed so that they can be used in the Post-Implementation phase for reporting and support needs.


Phase Six: Implement

Implementing a mobile ministry project can be a difficult proposition. If this is an application, implementation might look like a slow-beta period, or a larger “let’s see what happens” kind of release. When it is a business process, implementation cannot afford such slow releases, and usually includes additional time and resources towards addressing items that could not show up in testing, implementing training, and finishing the reporting queue.

Your public feedback queue and media channels should be established and utilized at this point. Mechanisms such as Twitter, Facebook, Get Satisfaction, etc. are excellent for acquiring and monitoring specific feedback, while also lending a (hopefully) positive light on your ability to manage the roll-out of your product.


Phase Seven: Support, Report, and Reinitialize

Supporting your product includes having the appropriate documentation (text, video, etc.), publicity support, and consistent presence (support forums, email channels, etc.) which allow you to take in and categorize compliments and issues related to the implemented iteration of your project. Support does not necessarily include fixing all of those items which are brought to your attention – some items need to be input into the queue for re-initialization into another project.

As with your testing queue, the reporting structure that you use to watch usage, trends, and spot potential problems down the line should be in place here. Your report data might come from server logs, emails, or a combination of several streams of data, to which are collected in a regular report by which project managers an stakeholders can have a concise view of the project as it related to the specific goal.

Reinitialize means that you’ve met enough the goals of your project, and due to the data gained within the design, testing, implementation, or support/report streams, that you have an update to the project that you can do. Again here, the goal needs to be specific, but also not deviate greatly from the original product’s goal. It is not uncommon to go back to the drawing board and rebuild at this point.

Items Not Seen In this Methodology

This methodology has been designed to be very generic. How you or your team manages their tasks, template documents, or other assets is not the point of this methodology. It is a framework to assist you/your team to understand from the outset of the project how to focus your efforts without losing focus of the faith and technological implications of your product. If at the end of your project, you have clearly demonstrated that you have forwarded some/all of the key ideals or behaviors of your faith tradition, then you can successfully say that you have engaged within mobile ministry.

Mobile Ministry Event Calendar

If you’ve not seen this already in our redesigned sidebar, and in keeping with that 2012 resolution in keeping on top of conferences and such which might be beneficial to those following mobile (in) ministry, there’s now a public Google Calendar showing a smattering of #mobmin events for 2012 and beyond.

This calendar actually started as a personal calendar that’s now public, with some members of the Mobile Ministry Forum having the ability to add to this calendar. I’ve gone the route of putting many of the major events that we talked about before on there. As the year goes forward, you will also be able to see some smaller calls and conferences as they happen appear on here. The link to this calendar will show on our mobile site(s) soon-ish.

Small instructions in case you feel like sharing (hint, hint):
  • For those of you with Android devices, you should simply need to go into your Google Calendar account (use a desktop web browser), and then add this calendar to have it appear alongside your calendar; I’ve yet to play with a 4.0 (ICS) device to see if any changes with the calendar effect this or make it simpler
  • For those of you not using an Android device, but do have a Google Calendar account, you need to copy each event (individually) into your main calendar, and those events will appear there. However, they will not update when the calendar updates.
  • You can subscribe to this calendar via RSS (link here); items will show in your RSS reader when they are added to the calendar, not when they occur
  • You can also add to your Apple devices calendar using iCal (link here). If you add this link into iTunes, it should transfer to another (layer) calendar in your iOS devices; this link does update when the main calendar is updated as far as I know.
  • Depending on the mobile device you are using, the RSS/iCal item should show an individual item download, so that (for example) from a mobile device, you can download a specific event into your calendar. From your calendar, sharing is as simple as hitting the “share” button on your device and it sends as a vCal item in an MMS message
  • I have a workflow running using ifttt which automatically tweets out newly added events using the #mobmin hashtag – so if you are looking for an easy way to have your audiences keep up with events, that hashtag just got more valuable.

If there’s an event that needs updated information, needs to be added/removed, just let us know.

 

Speak Unto That Object: Be Thou Computer

Was speaking with my friend about an post that I’d done on my personal blog at the beginning of the year, and to contextualize things, I used the following Scripture (Mark 11:12-26):

…And on the morrow, when they were come from Bethany, he was hungry: And seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves, he came, if haply he might find any thing thereon: and when he came to it, he found nothing but leaves; for the time of figs was not yet. And Jesus answered and said unto it, “No man eat fruit of thee hereafter for ever.” And his disciples heard it.

And they come to Jerusalem: and Jesus went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves; And would not suffer that any man should carry any vessel through the temple. And he taught, saying unto them, “Is it not written, My house shall be called of all nations the house of prayer? but ye have made it a den of thieves.” And the scribes and chief priests heard it, and sought how they might destroy him: for they feared him, because all the people was astonished at his doctrine.

And when even was come, he went out of the city. And in the morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots. And Peter calling to remembrance saith unto him, Master, behold, the fig tree which thou cursedst is withered away.

And Jesus answering saith unto them, “Have faith in God. For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them. And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses. But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.”

When I was a member of a particular church community in PA, they would use this Scripture often as a jumping off point to the power that a believer has to activate their fatih my speaking, believing, and acting. While I’ve got my own quibbles about the doctrines of “word-faith” approaches, I can appreciate the attention to the creative and instigative ability that God Himself used when taking objects that had no form, and after speaking, they became all that we know of as the earth and all that’s wihtin it (Genesis 1).

That article on my personal blog was about a similar approach to computing being taken on by Alvaro Cassinelli and Alexis Zerroug called invoked computing. You can think of this simply as invoking a specific context of computing to an object that might not by its nature have any computing ability. Invoked computing comes from taking the characteristics of a multi-modal, spatial augmented reality, and grafting it into a system which changes objects into (computational) communication devices. Here’s a snippet of their interview at The Guardian:

…In the invoked computing scenario, the object itself works as an “invocation” trigger and supports interactivity. We naturally looked for trigger-objects that are more or less pervasive in the real world, hence food-related items (the banana and pizza box). As triggers, they operate in ways similar to icons in a computer operating system: these are not the applications themselves, but keys to open them, to invoke them. On the other hand, real physical objects become the support for the interaction, provide surfaces on which to project images or sound.

So, in effect, you’re turning everyday objects into touchscreens?

Not exactly. The invoked computing project proposes systems to project “function” on real objects, but without making the interactive space resemble a screen with icons. Indeed, we are not trying to project icons or conventional representations of computer applications into the real world that when touched will launch a particular computing routine. Instead, affordances in the physical world itself should suggest and trigger function – even new, improvised functions….

This idea of invoked computing goes a good bit beyond mobile, and even further than simply “a computer for everyone and everyone with the ability to access whatever a computer terminal offers.” Inovked computing is about literally speaking and utilizing the activity of computers (linking, computation, creation, and communication) on objects which would not be normally associated with computing.

We can see this in part today with some of the USB items that you’d catch in a swag bag (USB bracelets that also tell time, or a rock that’s also a memory key). This goes a good bit further though. Invoked computing asks us to consider a reality where what we need from a computer is as close as what we speak out of our mouth. With such a reality, would we speak life and death as Jesus did with the fig tree, or would we move a mountain out of the way of someone else’s life so that they could see the path they were intended to travel a bit clearer?

What we do in mobile with Siri, Google Voice Commands, Vriingo, and such is going down this road. What kind of faith are we teaching people to have for their lives when more than just a question can be answered or a text sent is the result? What happens when we provoke a different kind of reallity into objects than what was originally designed?
