2012 Resolution #3: Get Connected to Tech, Mobile, and Mobile Ministry Events

2012 calendar from Just Calendar

The information in this post can now be found on the #mobmin Event Calendar

Being that it is the beginning of the year, and the trade show/conference run for 2012 has already begun with CES, it’s a good time to look at a few lists of events and doings happening in an around mobile this year.

The first list of events comes to us from Mobile Advance. They have compiled a Google Doc listing events of interest to those looking at mobile ministry-oriented events in 2012.

An overlapping, but more mobile industry-wide listing of events is constantly updated and published over at WIP Connector. These events range from large conferences, to workshops, to regional developer/marketing events.

Other event listings, such as the ones at Camerjam, Microsoft, and GSMA are updated frequently with various workshops which can be useful for connecting with others in mobile.

If you are looking for local happenings, I would recommend checking out sites such as Upcoming and Meetup as they tend to have smaller, locally focused events which might also be useful for activities around mobile and mobile ministry. Digital Disciples and the Church IT Roundtable are other connection points for locally relevant tech with ministry leanings.

Feel free to add your events to any of the calendars noted, or to this post. While 2012 looks like a crazy busy year on the conference side of things, it also seems to be a number of needed connection points. Looking forward to seeing you at some of these.

Where’s My Advent App/Calendar?

Monday, November 28th, 2011

Screenshot of Waiting in Joyful Hope Advent calendar appOne of the kinks that you tend to run into when you have a Sunday schedule like ours (i.e., visiting many churches/fellowships per month), is that of the holiday season. You have some groups which do a great job of trying to center their communities on the “holy” part of the holidays. Then, you have others who seem like they are doing everything they can to get rid of that materialistic mentality all-to-common for this time of year. IMO, if every church simply observed Advent, that might not be so hard to do.

So, one of the many items that I’ve kept my ears to the ground for in non-Catholic/Orthodox/Lutherian churches is how they go about Advent. Unfortunately, there’s not much of a mention of it. So, how about we help that out a bit?

Here are a few that I’ve found:

Now, you could simply just be publishing an Advent calendar via Google Calendar (hint, hint) and showing your community how to add this to their mobile devices, but these apps might make it a bit easier.

What are some of the applications or calendars that you folks are using for Advent to keep Christ’s evenutal coming in the front of the eyes of your communities?

More Than a Bible in My Pocket

Wednesday, October 27th, 2010

When I started with mobile devices a few years ago, I had a few uses in mind. My primary desire was to keep up with my calendar & tasks, but I also wanted to always keep a Bible in my pocket per se. At that time, I thought it was cool to carry around a Bible or two & a devotion with me at all times in my mobile.

Fast forward a few years and I can now say that I have more than just a Bible in my pocket. These days I’m carrying around an entire theological library, all under the guise of a mobile phone (and iPod Touch). With an unlimited data plan & Wi-Fi, I now have at my fingertips just as much information as I have sitting at my laptop or desktop computer. So, a few years ago when I thought it was nice to just read the Bible on my mobile, I’m now able to interact with the text of the Bible and put together a full blown study right from my mobile device. I never would have thought that such a thing would be possible from such a light piece of hardware (in weight & processing power).

Apple iPod Touch, via Apple WebsiteNow, I can freely travel with just my phone, leaving my laptop at home, and not feel like I’m leaving anything behind. I’ve got my calendar, tasks, contacts, and my 2,000+ volume digital theological library right there with me. How awesome is that?! I can only imagine what I’ll be doing a few years from now on my mobile!
